Holi Ke Pehle Ki Holika
On the Full Moon Night of Phalgun Month of Hindu Calendar, this auspicious festival is celebrated with joy and gaiety. Holika Dahan is the mark of the Starting Festival of the Victory of Good over Evil. The Concept behind the Starting Festival of the Hindus, deciphers, all other Hindu festivals getting interlinked with each other starting with Holi, marking the essence of Lord Vinshu’s incarnation in every festival. Each festival inspires us to win the battle with the evil in and around us by being calm and composed all through.
As I am writing this blog on the Poornima Tithi of Phalgun Month, I take this opportunity to talk more about Holi and Holika Dahan.
As the Legend follows; to kill the evil in HiranyaKashyap’s sister “Holika” Lord Vishu with His Supreme Power “OM” protected an Innocent, Dharma Follower and a Good human in Prahlad who was set on Fire with and by Holika so as to Cremate him alive in order to spread Adharma all around. Here “Dharma follower” doesn’t mean following a specific religion or a specific belief. Dharma signifies your inner self, Control on your Indriyaas, a Grip on your Anger, Anxiety, keeping away from creating False Perceptions. On the other hand, “Adharma” signifies, inculcating all possible negative energy to spread riots of Astra and Shastra together in your surroundings.
Following the tradition, we celebrate this day by doing puja in a given muhurta by burning the Pyre of Negativity in the form of Holika. Holika, being a superpower woman, had been through a lot of pain and sufferings while getting burnt alive as she had a boon of wearing a Divine blanket to master the heat/fire in any given ratio which Holika had used for Prahalad, but, with negativity within. In other words, she misused her powers in order to please her elder brother and overruled her core Dharma.
As it marks a death of a human being irrespective of her deeds, it becomes important for the rest of the people to still pray for a soul like of Holika’s to rest in peace. Therefore, various delicacies which we prepare, especially the steamed Rice, once cooked, is dipped in cold water for some time. As per the belief, this process helps Holika’s soul to rest and at the same time, the dipped steamed rice is believed to have become a Stale Food now in order to pack up the death rituals. It is thus not offered to God.
The other delicacies like types of Fritters and sweets are marked as the celebration of the Victory of Good over Evil and thus offer to God for a Divine blessing on Holika Dahan. We, therefore, start with thanking our inner self for following Dharma with hues of vibrant colours on Holi which falls the following day marking the First day and beginning of New Year with Chaitra month of Hindu Calendar.
Stay Happy! Stay Colourful! Happy Holi!!!
